Avigilon vs Axis: which security cameras fit your building?
An honest comparison from an installer that installs and fully supports both.
The quick answer
Choose Avigilon if you want cameras, video software and AI search from one maker, with the option of Avigilon access control later. Choose Axis if you want to pick your own video platform, such as Milestone or Genetec, or need specialty cameras, audio or door stations alongside your cameras.
Avigilon vs Axis side by side
| Avigilon | Axis | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A Motorola Solutions company with roots in Vancouver that makes cameras, video software and access control. | A Swedish network camera maker, part of Canon, with a very wide range of cameras, audio and intercom products. |
| Video software | Designed to work best with its own platforms: Avigilon Unity on site or Avigilon Alta in the cloud. | Works with almost every major video platform, including Milestone and Genetec, or with Axis’s own AXIS Camera Station. |
| Analytics | AI analytics in the cameras and software, including Appearance Search to find a person or vehicle across cameras. | Analytics on the camera, with more available as apps from Axis and its partners. |
| Range | Fixed, dome, PTZ and multi-sensor cameras. | One of the widest ranges: fixed, dome, PTZ, multi-sensor, thermal and specialty cameras, plus speakers and door stations. |
| Mixing brands | Some features work fully only with Avigilon cameras on Avigilon software. | Built for open systems, so it mixes well with other brands. |
| Best fit | Sites that want one maker for cameras, software and search. | Sites that want to choose or keep their video platform. |
Which should you choose?
Choose Avigilon if
- You want cameras and video software from one maker
- Fast search across cameras matters to your team
- You may add Avigilon access control later
Choose Axis if
- You already run, or want, Milestone or Genetec
- You need thermal, specialty cameras, speakers or door stations
- You’re adding cameras to a mixed-brand system
Best choice by building type
| Building | Our usual recommendation |
|---|---|
| Condo or rental building | Either works. Avigilon for one simple system; Axis where the building already runs another video platform. |
| Office building | Avigilon for built-in search and one maker; Axis for a mixed system on Milestone or Genetec. |
| Industrial yard or heavy commercial site | Both work. Axis where thermal or specialty cameras are needed; Avigilon for search across a large site. |
| School or campus | Avigilon for one system with search; Axis where the school board has a set video platform. |
| Multi-site portfolio | Avigilon Alta for cloud management; Axis on Genetec or Milestone for a set platform across every site. |
Costs to consider
The cost of either depends on the number and type of cameras, the video software and its licences, storage size and how long you keep video, and whether you choose on-site or cloud management.
Ask any installer for the full cost of ownership, including licences, subscriptions, maintenance and future expansion. We include all of it in our written quotes, so there are no surprises.
Can we keep our existing cameras?
Often, yes. Axis cameras work with most video platforms, and Avigilon’s software can run many other brands’ cameras, though some features need matching hardware. We check each model during design and tell you which ones can stay.
Still not sure?
We install and fully support both, so we’ll recommend whichever fits your building, after a site walk.
