Security for remote and rural sites

Fully off-grid camera and access systems, fast HD wireless networking, and monitored fences with sensors and electric deterrents for sites with no power or internet. Designed, installed and supported by Hightower across Canada and the USA.

Updated

Remote site security we install

Everything a site needs when there’s no power, no internet and nobody around.

Fully off-grid systems

Solar panels and battery banks that power cameras, gates, access control, lights and the network, with no grid power and no generator runs.

Fast HD networking

Point-to-point wireless links, satellite internet and cellular, built with the speed to stream HD video live from sites with no internet.

Monitored fences

Fence sensors that detect climbing and cutting by zone, and electric deterrent fences that warn people off before they get in. How they work.

Cameras and gate alerts

Solar-powered HD cameras with person and vehicle detection, gate alerts and plate recognition that logs every vehicle.

Fully off-grid security systems

Solar and battery systems that run the whole site, sized for the coldest, darkest weeks of the year.

Sized for Alberta and BC winters

We size solar panels and batteries for short December days and deep cold, not summer, so the system keeps running when you need it most.

Cold-rated batteries and enclosures

Batteries, enclosures and cameras chosen for the cold, mounted on poles, towers, buildings or mobile trailers.

Power for the whole site

One off-grid system can run the cameras, gate operator, access control, lights, fence energizer and network gear together.

Power status on your phone

Check battery, solar charging and connection status from your phone, so you know the site is up without driving out.

Fast HD networking for remote sites

Live HD video and remote access from sites with no internet, no fibre and weak cell signal.

Point-to-point wireless links

Fast wireless links that carry HD video from the site back to a building, tower or another site with internet.

Satellite internet

High-speed satellite internet for sites far from any cell tower or wired connection.

Cellular with backup

Cellular connections with a second carrier or satellite as backup, so one outage doesn’t take the site offline.

Built for HD video

Enough speed to watch HD video live, with recording on site so nothing is lost if the link drops. Signal is tested on the site walk. See networks.

Monitored fences with sensors and electric deterrents

Stop people at the fence line, not after they’re in the yard.

  1. 1
    Fence sensors by zone

Sensors on the fence detect climbing, cutting and lifting, and report exactly which zone was hit.

  2. 2
    Electric deterrent fence

A pulsed electric fence with warning signs gives a sharp, non-lethal shock and sends an alarm if it’s cut or shorted.

  3. 3
    Cameras lock on

Cameras turn to the zone that was touched, so you see who is there and what they’re doing.

  4. 4
    Lights and siren

Lights and a siren come on at that zone, so people know they’ve been seen and leave.

  5. 5
    Alert to your phone

You get the alert with video, and the event is logged for the morning.

Want someone watching too? Add 24/7 remote video monitoring through our monitoring partner. Fences also connect to intrusion alarms.

Access and safety on site

Control who gets in, where they go, and who is still on site.

Restricted areas, locked down and logged

Limit who can enter restricted areas like control buildings, chemical and fuel storage and site shacks, with a log of every entry. See access control.

Gates and plate recognition

Solar gate operators, keypads, fobs and phone access, with plate recognition logging every vehicle that comes in.

Smart detection, fewer false alerts

Cameras with person and vehicle detection ignore wind, weather and most animals, so the alerts you get are worth looking at. See security cameras.

Muster for crews on site

A live roll call at muster points for plants, camps and facilities with crews on site. See muster systems.

Stuck with a system nobody will fix?

If your remote cameras keep dropping offline or the batteries die every winter, we can repair them, move them to a proper off-grid system and take over support.

What affects the cost of remote site security

Every site is different, but these are the factors that move the price. After a site walk, you get a clear written quote.

Number of sites and cameras

Each site needs its own power, connection and mounting, so the site count matters as much as the camera count.

Off-grid power

Solar panels and batteries are sized to everything on the site and the winter sun. Sites with grid power cost less to set up.

Network

Wireless links, satellite or cellular plans, depending on how far the site is from a connection.

Fence length and zones

Fence sensors and electric deterrents are priced by the length of fence and the number of zones.

Mounting and monitoring

Existing poles, new poles, towers or mobile trailers, plus an optional monthly plan for 24/7 video monitoring.

Questions to ask a remote site security installer

The answers tell you whether the system will still be working in February.

  1. Will it keep running off-grid in December?

Ask how the panels and batteries were sized, and for how many days of cloud.

  2. Is the network fast enough for HD video?

Ask whether the link was tested at the site and whether you can watch live video, not just clips.

  3. What happens when someone touches the fence?

Ask whether the fence reports the zone, turns the cameras, and alerts you.

  4. How are false alarms handled?

Wind, snow, animals and headlights set off basic systems. Ask how detection is tuned.

  5. Who services it when it fails?

Remote sites are a long drive. Ask who goes out, and how quickly.

Remote site security questions

Can a security system run fully off-grid?

Yes. Solar panels and battery banks can power cameras, gates, access control, lights, fence energizers and the network with no grid power. We size the system for winter, not summer.

Do solar-powered security cameras work in Alberta and BC winters?

Yes, when the system is sized for it. Short December days and deep cold are the hard part, so we size the solar panels and batteries for winter and use cameras and batteries rated for the cold.

Can we watch HD video from a site with no internet?

Yes. We connect the site with a point-to-point wireless link, satellite internet or cellular, built with the speed for live HD video, and record on site so nothing is lost if the link drops.

What is a monitored fence?

A monitored fence has sensors that detect climbing, cutting or lifting and report the zone. It can turn cameras to that spot, switch on lights and a siren, and send you an alert with video.

Do you install electric security fences?

Yes. Electric deterrent fences give a sharp, non-lethal pulse, carry warning signs and send an alarm if they’re cut or shorted. They run off-grid on solar where there’s no power.

Can someone watch our remote site cameras live?

Yes, 24/7. With remote video monitoring through our monitoring partner, an operator reviews alerts in real time, warns people off through a speaker, and calls police or your contact when it’s a real threat.

Do you secure farms?

Yes, the farm operation: shops, equipment yards, fuel tanks, grain bins and gates. We don’t install home security, so the farmhouse itself isn’t part of what we do.

Do you work on oil and gas sites?

Yes. We secure leases, yards, field offices and camps with off-grid cameras, monitored fences, gate control, access control and muster systems, and we can limit and track access into restricted areas. Tell us the site’s safety and equipment requirements up front, and we plan the system to suit.

Can you limit and track access to restricted areas?

Yes. Access control on gates, doors and buildings lets only approved people into restricted areas, at the times you set, and logs every entry. Contractors can get access that expires when the job ends, and you can pull a report of who went where.

Can the cameras move between sites?

Yes. Mobile solar camera trailers and towers can be moved as a job or season changes, so you don’t pay for a new system at every site.
