Oil and gas site security: muster, restricted areas and remote sites
For operators, energy-service companies, fabrication shops and contractor yards in Fort McMurray, Nisku, Acheson, the Industrial Heartland and across Alberta.
Updated
The quick answer
Oil and gas sites need to know who is on site, keep people out of areas they shouldn’t enter, and protect equipment far from power and internet. We install muster systems that count everyone at the muster points, access control that limits and tracks entry into restricted areas, gate access for crews and deliveries, and solar-powered and cellular cameras with monitored fences for remote leases and yards.
Sites we secure
In the field
- Well sites and leases
- Batteries and remote facility yards
- Pipeline and laydown yards
- Equipment and pipe storage
- Workforce camp entrances and gates
In the industrial parks
- Energy-service and rental yards
- Fabrication and machine shops
- Trucking and hauling yards
- Warehouses and parts depots
- Field offices and head offices
Muster: know who is on site
| Part | What it does |
|---|---|
| Readers at the gates and doors | Every badge in and out builds a live list of who is on site. |
| Muster point readers | In an evacuation, people badge in at their muster point. |
| Live roll call | Supervisors see who has checked in and who is still missing. |
| Contractors and visitors | Short-term badges for crews and visitors, so they’re counted too. |
| Drill reports | A record of every drill and real event. |
See muster systems for how a roll call works.
Restricted areas
We can limit and track access into restricted areas: control rooms, chemical and fuel storage, compressor and pump buildings, tool cribs and server rooms. You decide who is approved for each area, for example only staff who have had the site’s orientation, and the system lets only them in and logs every entry.
Badges for contractors can expire at the end of a job, and a lost badge can be shut off from anywhere. Inside hazardous (classified) areas, equipment has to meet special rules, so we plan readers and cameras for the gates, yards, buildings and fence lines with your safety team.
Remote and off-grid sites
| System | What it does |
|---|---|
| Solar-powered cameras | Run where there is no power, with batteries for dark winter days. |
| Cellular and satellite links | Send video and alerts from sites with no internet. |
| Wireless links | Point-to-point links join buildings, gates and yards across a site. |
| Monitored fences | Sensors and electric deterrents on the fence line. See monitored fences. |
| Remote video monitoring | After-hours alerts watched by our monitoring partner. |
See remote site security for leases, gravel pits, farm yards and laydown yards.
Gates and yards
| System | What it does |
|---|---|
| Card and code access | Crews, drivers and contractors get in with a badge, a code or a mobile credential. |
| Plate recognition | Cameras read plates at the gate and keep a record of every vehicle. |
| Gate intercom | Drivers without a badge call the office or the gatehouse. |
| Gate operators | We connect access control to the gate operator, usually supplied by a gate company. |
Fort McMurray and the industrial parks
| Area | What we see there |
|---|---|
| Fort McMurray | Camps, shops, yards and offices serving the oil sands, with long winters and sites spread far apart. |
| Nisku and Leduc | Energy-service yards, fabrication shops and trucking around the Nisku business park and the airport. |
| Acheson | Large yards, warehouses and fabrication shops west of Edmonton. |
| Fort Saskatchewan and the Industrial Heartland | Contractor yards, warehouses, offices and the gates and fence lines around plants. |
| Grande Prairie | Service yards, shops and remote leases across the Peace Country. |
| Lloydminster | Heavy oil service yards and lease sites on both sides of the border. |

Oil and gas site security questions
What is a muster system?
Card readers at the gates, doors and muster points that keep a live list of who is on site and, in an evacuation, show who has checked in and who is still missing.
Can you limit who enters restricted areas?
Yes. We limit and track access into restricted areas such as control rooms and chemical storage. You decide who is approved, and every entry is logged.
Can contractors and visitors be counted?
Yes. They get short-term badges that can expire at the end of the job, so they show up in the roll call like staff.
Do you install cameras where there is no power?
Yes. We install solar-powered and cellular cameras, with satellite or wireless links where there is no cell signal.
Can you watch our sites after hours?
Yes. Remote video monitoring is provided 24/7 through our monitoring partner.
Do you install monitored fences?
Yes. Fence sensors and electric deterrents, tied to cameras and alarms.
Do you install equipment inside hazardous areas?
Equipment inside hazardous (classified) areas has to meet special rules. Talk to us about your site and we’ll plan with your safety team.
Do you work in Fort McMurray, Nisku, Acheson and the Industrial Heartland?
Yes. We secure sites and yards in all of them, and across Alberta and BC.
Can you take over a system another company installed?
Yes. We take over and fix systems installed by other companies, and regain admin access where you own the system.
Do we get admin access and documentation?
Yes. We hand over admin access and full documentation on every project.
