Good night video on a commercial site comes from three things working together: a camera with a sensor that handles low light, enough light on the scene (infrared or visible), and placement that avoids glare and backlight. For parkades, yards and loading docks in Alberta and BC, getting this right is what turns a dark blur into a usable face or plate.
How commercial cameras see at night
- Infrared (IR): built-in IR lights let the camera record in black and white in the dark. Check the rated IR range against the distance you need to cover.
- Low-light colour: newer sensors keep colour video in very little light, which helps identify vehicles and clothing.
- Visible white light: some cameras add a small white light that also warns people they are being recorded.
- Wide dynamic range (WDR): handles headlights, lit doorways and dark corners in the same view.
- Thermal cameras: detect heat rather than light, useful for long fence lines and large dark yards, often paired with a regular camera for identification.
Placement matters as much as the camera
A camera pointed at headlights, a bright sign or a lit doorway will struggle at night no matter how good its sensor is. We place cameras so the light falls on the scene rather than into the lens, keep IR from bouncing off nearby walls or eaves, and add lighting where the site is simply too dark.
Plates and faces at night
Reading plates at night needs a camera set up for the job, with the right angle, a fast shutter and IR tuned for reflective plates. A general overview camera will rarely capture a readable plate after dark. Faces need the camera close to the entry point, at head height, with even light.
Winter nights in Alberta and BC
Long winter nights mean outdoor cameras spend much of the day in low light. Snow reflects IR and can wash out the picture, falling snow can trigger motion alerts, and coastal rain streaks the lens. People and vehicle detection, heated or sheltered housings and regular lens cleaning keep night video useful.

What to specify on a commercial camera job
Decide what each camera must show (a face, a plate, or only activity), how many days of video you need, and who can view it. Outdoor cameras in Alberta and BC need housings and mounts that handle cold, wind and hail. Keep cameras on their own network, and plan power and cable before the walls close.

Phone viewing is part of a normal install. Live 24/7 monitoring is separate: our monitoring partner reviews alerts, can warn people off through a speaker and calls police or your contact when it is real. We do not run an in-house monitoring centre.
