How to add, edit and delete a user in Inner Range Inception

Step-by-step help for the Inception web interface, for property managers and system administrators.

The quick answer

In short

Log in to the Inception web interface and go to Configuration > Users > Manage Users. Add a new user, enter a unique name, set a PIN if they use keypads, present their new card at a reader and choose it under Add From Recent Card Reads, add their permissions, then click Save. To remove someone, select them and click Delete.

We’ll do it for you

Short on time, or no admin login? Our team can add, change or remove users, fobs and listings for you, remotely where your system allows it, or on site.

Before you start

Works with: Inner Range Inception (web interface). Integriti works differently; call us for Integriti help.

Who it’s for: Property managers and system administrators

You need: an Inception login that can manage users, the person’s name, their new card or fob, and the doors and areas they need. Permissions and permission groups must already be set up.

Add a user

  1. Log in to the Inception web interface in a browser.

  2. Go to Configuration > Users > Manage Users and choose to add a new user.

  3. Enter the user’s name. Each name must be unique.

  4. If they’ll use a keypad or Elite terminal, enter a Security PIN (2 to 8 digits by default), or click Generate for an unused PIN.

  5. Present the new card or fob at any reader. Then, under Credentials, click Add From Recent Card Reads and choose it.

  6. Under permissions, add the permission groups (or single permissions) that set which doors and areas they can use, and when.

  7. Click Save in the toolbox at the top of the page, then test the card at a door.

First time? The “Add a New User” guided tour at the bottom of the Inception Dashboard walks you through it.

Edit a user

  1. Go to Configuration > Users > Manage Users.

  2. Select the user in the list on the left. Use the search box to find them quickly.

  3. Change their name, PIN, credentials or permissions.

  4. Click Save.

Delete a user

  1. Go to Configuration > Users > Manage Users and select the user.

  2. Click Delete in the toolbox and confirm.

Their card and PIN stop working once the user is deleted.

Lost or stolen card

Open the user, remove the lost card from their credentials and click Save, so it stops working straight away. Then add their new card the same way you added the first one.

Not sure which card it is? Call us and we’ll find it and remove it.

Permissions and permission groups

A permission sets what someone can do, such as open a door or arm an area, and when. A permission group bundles several permissions, for example “Staff, business hours”, so you give the same access to many people by adding the group to each user.

Permission groups are set up under Configuration > Users > Permission Groups. Changing a group changes access for every user in it, so take care, or ask us to change it.

If it didn’t work

The card isn’t in Recent Card Reads

Present it at a reader again and refresh the list. If it still doesn’t appear, the reader may be offline: call us.

The name won’t save

Another user already has that name. Add something to make it unique, such as a unit or department.

The card doesn’t open a door

Check the user’s permissions include that door at that time, and that the card was saved to the right user.

Can’t see Manage Users

Your login doesn’t have permission to manage users. Ask your administrator, or call us.

Rather we did it?

We’ll add, change or remove users and cards for you, remotely where your system allows it, or on site.

Request help

Stuck with a system nobody will fix?

We repair and take over cameras, access control, intercoms and alarms installed by other companies, when your current provider has fallen short.

Questions

Can one person have more than one card?

Yes. A user can have more than one credential, such as a card and a fob.

Can users change their own PIN?

Yes, at an Elite terminal, if your system allows it. Otherwise an administrator changes it in Manage Users.

What’s a permission group?

A set of permissions you give to many users at once, so everyone in the group gets the same doors and times.

Can you add users for us remotely?

Often, yes, when the system can be reached remotely and you give us permission. Otherwise we book a visit.

Where can I get more Inner Range cards or fobs?

From us. We match them to your readers and card format and can add them to the system too.
