UPS beeping and your cameras or access control are down? Here’s the quick fix
For property managers, building operators, IT and front desk staff. Applies to any brand of UPS.
The quick answer
A UPS (battery backup) that beeps and won’t power your equipment usually has a failing battery. As a temporary workaround, move the plugs from the battery backup outlets to the surge-only outlets on the same UPS. That gets your system running again without battery backup until the UPS or its batteries are replaced.
We’ll do it for you
Book a UPS replacement. Tell us the UPS brand and model from its label so we bring the right one. Same-day UPS replacement available.
Before you start
Works with: Any brand of UPS, such as APC, CyberPower, Eaton and Tripp Lite
Who it’s for: Property managers, building operators, IT and front desk staff

Check this first
Is the building power out? A UPS beeps while it runs on battery during an outage. That’s normal: don’t move anything. Call us if the outage is long.
Is the UPS hot, swollen, cracked, leaking, smoking or smelling like rotten eggs? Don’t touch the plugs. If it’s safe to do so, switch the UPS off at its power button, unplug it from the wall, keep people away and call us. If there’s smoke or fire, call 911.
Temporary workaround
Look at the back of the UPS. The outlets are usually labelled “Battery Backup + Surge” and “Surge Only” (or “Surge Protection”).
One at a time, move each plug from a battery backup outlet to a surge-only outlet on the same UPS.
Wait 2 to 5 minutes. Recorders, network switches and access control panels can take a few minutes to start.
Check that cameras are recording and that doors and fobs work again.
Book a UPS replacement. Until it’s fixed, a power blip will shut the system down, and doors may lock or unlock depending on the lock type.
If the surge-only outlets don’t power anything either, the UPS itself has failed. Until we arrive, plug the equipment into a separate surge protector (a power bar with surge protection) in the wall outlet. Never plug security equipment straight into the wall without surge protection. Then call us.
Why UPS batteries fail
- Batteries wear out with age. This is the most common cause we see.
- Heat in comms rooms and closets shortens battery life.
- Repeated power outages and brownouts wear batteries faster.
- Too much equipment on the battery side (overload) can also cause beeping and shutdowns.
Signs your UPS needs attention
- Constant or repeating beeps, a “replace battery” light or a battery warning on the display.
- Equipment restarts by itself, or shuts off during short power blips.
- The UPS is several years old and has never had a battery change.
What our technicians do
- Replace the batteries or the whole UPS, sized for your recorders, switches and access control panels.
- Put the system back on battery backup and test it.
- Same-day UPS replacement available.
- Set up UPS alerts so you know before a battery fails.
- Check UPS batteries on our maintenance visits.
If it didn’t work
Nothing powers on from either outlet
The UPS or the power circuit has failed. Call us.
Some devices come back, but cameras show offline
A network switch may need attention. Call us, or see camera offline or not recording.
Doors won’t lock or unlock after the power returns
Call us. See doors in a power outage.
From our technicians
Most UPS problems we see are worn-out batteries. Moving the plugs to the surge-only side gets your system running in minutes, but there’s no backup until the batteries or the UPS are replaced, so book it right away.
UPS still beeping?
Book a UPS replacement. We size it for your recorders, switches and door panels, and test it.
Stuck with a system nobody will fix?
We repair and take over cameras, access control, intercoms and alarms installed by other companies, when your current provider has fallen short.
Questions
Is it safe to run without battery backup?
For a short time only. Without backup, a power blip shuts the system down, so book a UPS replacement right away.
How long do UPS batteries last?
Usually a few years. Heat, frequent outages and overloading shorten their life, and the UPS maker lists the expected life for your model.
Why is my UPS beeping when the power is on?
Usually a failing battery, an overload or a fault the UPS has found. Check the display or lights, then call us.
Can you replace it the same day?
Yes. Same-day UPS replacement is available.
Do you check UPS batteries during maintenance visits?
Yes. We check UPS batteries as part of our maintenance visits.
Can you alert us before a UPS battery fails?
Yes. We can set up UPS alerts so you hear about a failing battery before it takes the system down.
